“The origins of the color puce are somewhat disputed, but it is generally believed to have originated in the 18th century. At that time, the color was extracted from the bodies of fleas, which were then mixed with other pigments to create a rich, dark hue. This method of making puce was highly labor-intensive and was eventually replaced by more modern methods.”

“In terms of psychology, puce is often seen as a calming and soothing color. It is associated with stability and reliability, and is often used in settings where relaxation and tranquility are desired. Puce can also be seen as a symbol of power and authority, and it is often used in corporate settings to convey a sense of strength and confidence.
Overall, puce is a versatile and sophisticated color that has been popular for many years. It is often associated with elegance and tranquility, and it can be used in a wide range of settings to add depth and warmth to a composition. Whether you are using puce in fashion, home decor, or art and design, this color is sure to make a statement.” Puce: Color Code, Meaning, History and Psychology Home Puce: Color Code, Meaning, History and Psychology July 18, 2024 Hailey van Braam

Okay, not so reassuring that the name of the color was based on what you get with a bunch of dead fleas. Show me the splash above, though, with explosions of these hues, blending in beautiful shades of puce, I’ll encourage its use in a kaleidoscope of settings. Tell me your wedding flowers and dresses will be a deep, darker mauve, and I’ll be very excited (while I know others in the know will cringe at the description). On the other hand, if puce is the color in question, I can’t stop a spill of split-green soup in my mind. No matter how many times I’m surpised to appreciate the beautiful, nearly-mysterious color all over again, my brain seems to say, “Yeah, that’s gorgeous. Can’t be puce.” It’s dismissed almost immediately somehow, replaced by the color of my first car in 1982, my senior year, a 1976 Chevy Malibu the color of that delicious soup inside and out, Emily Littela.

Anyone else share this struggle? From hereon, I shall go forth and choose puce.
