What to Do If You Accidentally Brushed Your Teeth With Hydrocortisone
In my medicine cabinet, stacked in a small, white, wire basket, I keep tube stuff – you know, antibiotic, eczema, and topical steriod creams as well as a travel-size tube of toothpaste. Regularly, I use an extra-flouride paste from the dentist and it’s also in a small, mostly-white tube that is corraled with the others; it doesn’t have red on the label. So, the travel-size it is until my husband can stop by to get my flouride edition on his way to work.
No problem. I like the Colgate. The toothpaste from the dentist doesn’t have much flavor or kick. Yesterday, I felt like giving my mouth an extra-thorough freshening. After putting a large, white shmear on my electric brush, but before hitting the ‘on’ button, I did a pre-wash, like I was at a self-serve car wash, as I stepped out of the bathroom to watch a thing on tv. Once every inch of my gums, teeth and tongue were ready to go, I let Oral-B do its thing, moving back to the sink in anticipation of spitting out some white froth. There wasn’t any. By this time, I noticed my lips felt odd, creamy and kind of sticky. My whole mouth full of the white substance, which definitely did not feel, taste or act like Colgate, a look behind the mirror answered any question I had; I had brushed my teeth, whole mouth really, with topical steroid.
Ugh, pthaaa, pewww, spit, spit, swish, gargle, gag, repeat five or six times.
We were leaving for my chiropractic appointment and I figured, “Okay, bone-head move. Another bone-head move. Fibro Sara.” Literally, smh. As I tied my shoes and headed to the car, I felt nauseated, but I feel nauseated more days than not. My doc made great soft-tissue adjustments and seriously addressed a couple pressure points, melting them.
Traveling home, I mentioned to my husband that I still felt very shitty and wondered aloud if it was from my morning misadventure. Telling myself this is why they have those directions that make you question what kind of an idiot needs it, I googled “cortisone oral effect,” and you could’ve knocked me over with a feather when I found the article below! That alone made me feel a bit less stupid. It was reassuring that I’d I’d done what I was supposed to (see: Ugh, pthaaa, pewww, spit, spit, swish, gargle, gag, repeat five or six times.) and they even offer a solution. I’m paraphrasing but basically it’s, “Don’t keep your toothpaste and medicinal creams in the same place, Dumbass!”
What to Do If You Accidentally Brushed Your Teeth With Hydrocortisone
Accidents happen, and sometimes we find ourselves in situations where we make a mistake. One such mistake could be accidentally brushing your teeth with hydrocortisone cream instead of toothpaste. While it may seem alarming, there are steps you can take to address the situation and ensure your oral health remains intact.
Step 1: Spit Out the Hydrocortisone
As soon as you realize your mistake, spit out the hydrocortisone from your mouth. Do not swallow it, as ingesting hydrocortisone can have adverse effects on your health.
Step 2: Rinse Your Mouth Thoroughly
After spitting out the hydrocortisone, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water. This will help remove any residue and minimize the potential for irritation.
Step 3: Brush Your Teeth with Toothpaste
Once you have rinsed your mouth, brush your teeth with toothpaste. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to ensure proper oral hygiene.
Step 4: Monitor for Any Adverse Reactions
After following the above steps, monitor your oral health for any adverse reactions. If you experience any discomfort, swelling, or unusual symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
How to Prevent Accidental Brushing with Hydrocortisone
To prevent accidental brushing with hydrocortisone in the future, consider the following tips:
- Keep your oral care products separate from other topical creams or medications.
- Store your toothpaste in a designated area to avoid confusion.
- Read labels carefully before using any product.
- Establish a routine to ensure you are using the correct products for their intended purposes.
